New for 2008! What do bicycles have to do with pens? Nothing. There is only a memory that makes Itallian designer Giuliano Mazzuoli feel a particular bond with the Officina line (“officina” in Italian means mechanical workshop). Each pen is inspired by everyday workshop tools. The Thread pattern is a deep cut spiral the length of the barrel. “The picture is from 1923 and the little girl in the picture is my mother. My grandfather Renato had a mechanical workshop with lathes and cutters with which he built handcrafted bicycles. At the beginning of the 1950s, with the advent of motorcycles in a hilly terrain like ours, the activity became obsolete and ended. A few years later, when I was about ten years old, I found and kept an old wooden box with metal objects that had a strange form. For some years afterwards it was a treasure that I tried keeping secret.”In November 1999 Giuliano Mazzuoli found himself in a modern mechanical workshop and looking around, he saw the same objects. Forty years later they still fascinated him with their beautiful shapes and he wanted to let others appreciate them not simply as mechanical tools, but as everyday writing instruments, and so “Officina, Writing Instruments” were born. Every Officina pen is hand crafted from a solid piece of aluminum and finished in brushed chrome.The 4-way convertible, Officina 4 Tempi model is the only pen easily convertible into four different functions: ballpoint, rollerball, 5.5 mm graphite pencil, or fountain pen. The photographs above demonstrate how this model appears in the gift box and the different functional pens and pencil that can be assembled with the parts that are in the box. In the box are five 5.5 mm leads (graphite-blue-red-yellow-green).The highlights of the pen are the hefty, handcrafted solid aluminum cap and barrel finished in Brushed Chrome, with highly polished trim, complete with four writing modes in the box: including ballpoint (with Fisher Space Pen type black refill), rollerball (with refill), 5.5 mm graphite pencil (with five 5.5 mm leads in black, blue, red, yellow, and green), or smooth writing stainless steel medium nib fountain pen.
